Flights, trains and buses compared, with tips for Sreemangal and the onward roads.
Sylhet is about 250 km north-east of Dhaka by road. You can fly, take the train or go by road, and each suits a different kind of trip. For fares, timetables and onward travel, read the full chapter on getting there and around.
By air
Domestic flights land at Osmani International Airport, about 15 minutes from the city centre. The flight takes under an hour, which makes it the best choice for short trips. Book early for Eid and long weekends.
By train
Intercity trains such as the Parabat, Jayantika, Kalni and the overnight Upaban run between Dhaka and Sylhet. The journey takes about seven hours and passes through Sreemangal, so the train is also the easiest way to reach tea country. Tickets go on sale online ten days ahead through Bangladesh Railway; check the current timetable before you travel.
By bus or car
Air-conditioned coaches leave Dhaka through the day and night, taking five to seven hours depending on traffic. Driving yourself gives the most freedom: stop at Satchari National Park on the way and visit Sreemangal before Sylhet.
For a first trip, take the train to Sreemangal, spend a night in the tea gardens, then continue to Sylhet by road. You will see both regions without backtracking.
