A tea country weekend in Sreemangal

3 min read · Updated 20 Oct 2026

Gibbons in Lawachara, lilies at Madhabpur, a morning among the tea bushes and seven-colour tea at dusk.

Sreemangal is the easiest weekend escape from Dhaka: the train drops you in town, Lawachara is about 8 km, or 20 minutes, away by CNG, and Madhabpur Lake about 16 km.

Day 1 (Friday)

  • Early morning walk in Lawachara National Park to look for gibbons.
  • Afternoon at Madhabpur Lake inside the tea estate.
  • Evening: seven-colour tea at a roadside cabin.

Day 2 (Saturday)

  • Sunrise walk through a tea estate, or a cycle ride between estates in the rains. Baikka Beel, the protected sanctuary in Hail Haor, is officially closed to visitors; ask in Sreemangal whether visitors are being allowed in.
  • If the gate lets you in, walk the Tea Research Institute grounds before the afternoon train back.

Stay in a resort among the estates rather than in town. Mornings in the tea are the highlight.
