Winter in Sylhet: clear rivers and haor birds

3 min read · Updated 20 Oct 2026

From November to February the rivers run clear, Lalakhal turns turquoise and the wetlands fill with birds.

Winter is the most comfortable season in Sylhet: dry roads, cool mornings and blue skies. It is also the busiest, so book stays early for December holidays.

What to see

  • Lalakhal and Jaflong, when the water is clearest.
  • Hakaluki Haor for migratory ducks and waders. Baikka Beel, a protected sanctuary in Hail Haor, has been officially closed to visitors since February 2025; ask in Sreemangal whether visitors are being allowed in.
  • Lawachara and Satchari, when trails are dry and gibbons are active in the mornings.
  • Shimul Bagan from about mid-February, in the Bangla months of Falgun and Chaitra, when the silk cotton trees bloom red.

Mornings can drop close to 10°C in the hills and on the water. Bring a warm layer for sunrise boat trips.
